SSA Handgun Range Safety Course

Overview and Testing Standards

After successfully completing the Handgun Range Safety Course at the SSA you will be permitted to access the Handgun range for individual use.  You must be a paid up member of the SSA to attend and have completed the Orientation tour.

This course consists of classroom content AND a practical firing demonstration at the range.  You will be evaluated with a written test and during a live firing exercise.

Bring hearing and eye protection.  Do NOT bring firearms OR live ammunition into the clubhouse.

The classroom portion is designed to review the rules contained in the SSA Range Manual, review the fundamentals of handgun safety, and review and practice safe handling of unloaded firearms.    Three different action types – Single action revolver, Double action revolver, and Semi-automatic actions will be discussed and handled by each of you as part of this course.

The practical component consists of each candidate demonstrating safe firearms handling practices (proving a firearm safe, loading and unloading with dummy ammunition in the classroom) BEFORE proceeding to the handgun range itself for live firing.   All live firing on this CLSC will be with a .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun, to be provided by the facilitators.    The facilitator may at their sole discretion allow a candidate to use their own .22 caliber handgun.

This course is meant to be a review to strengthen your knowledge of handling a handgun safely.  If you are taking this course you already have a valid RPAL (you must bring it with you), which means you have already demonstrated your knowledge of ACTS and PROVE.   It is expected that you come to this course with a strong understanding of what ACTS and PROVE means, and how it is practically used.  As shooters it is our shared responsibility to stay competent in these skills at all times.  Please come prepared.

If you are unfamiliar with any of the following:  Single action revolver, Double action revolver, or semi-automatic actions it will be taught in the course, but a little research (youtube) will help to get you started.

The minimum score on the written test is 12 out of 15.

The practical (live firing) and handling of firearms will be graded as either a PASS or FAIL.

During the live firing demonstration, you will be required to safely hit a SSA provided range target 10 times from a firing distance of 10 yards. Participants who do not successfully hit the SSA provided range target with 10 shots on the first attempt will be offered a second attempt provided they demonstrate safe firearms handling throughout the evaluation.

At all times, the facilitators must observe you handle the firearms using safe practices.  They are also there to help improve your knowledge, and competence.  If in doubt, just ask!
